Step-by-step guide

Set up Muse on your AIPI Lite, one click at a time.

Keep this page open next to the setup page. Parts 1 and 2 happen on your computer, part 3 on your phone. Every button name below is exactly what you'll see.

Part 0 · before you start

What you need

  • A Muse accountMuse is for people 18 and over in the United States and Canada. You can create the account in part 1 with your mobile number or email.
  • The Muse appiPhone: App Store. Android: Google Play. Search “Muse”, install the app from Meta, and sign in.
  • A computer with Chrome or EdgeMac, Windows or Linux. Safari, Firefox and phones can't install firmware over USB. Old browser? Chrome menu › Help › About Google Chrome updates it.
  • A USB-C data cableNot a charge-only cable. If your computer only has USB-A ports, use a USB-A to USB-C data cable.
  • Your Wi-Fi name and passwordA 2.4 GHz network with a password. Networks with a sign-in web page (hotels, schools, offices) won't work.
  • Your AIPI LiteAny color. It runs from the USB cable during setup, so the battery module can be on or off.

Part 1 · on your computer

Get your Muse SDK token

Meta asks every Muse gadget to carry an SDK token, a free code tied to your Muse account. Do this on the same computer you'll use for setup, so you can paste the token straight in.

  1. Open the SDK tokens page

In Chrome or Edge, go to gadgets.muse.ai/settings/sdk-tokens. You'll see a page titled SDK tokens that says “Log in to see and generate SDK tokens.”

  2. Click Log in, then sign in

Click Log in. On the screen “Log in or create an account”, type the mobile number or email you use for Muse and click Continue. Follow the prompts to finish; Muse may send you a code to confirm it's you. No Muse account yet? The same screen creates one.

What you'll see Log in or create an account Mobile number or email Continue

Use the same account as your Muse app. The token only works with the account that created it.

  3. Tick the terms box and click Generate token

You're back on SDK tokens. Under Your tokens, tick I agree to the Gadget SDK Terms, then click Generate token. The terms say the token is for personal use and works with a limited number of devices.

What you'll see Your tokens I agree to the Gadget SDK Terms Generate token

No Generate token button? You already have a token. If you still have it, use it. If not, see “Lost your token?” below.

  4. Click Copy

A box called Copy your new token appears with your token in it. Click Copy. This is the only time the page shows the whole token, so paste it into the setup page before you close this tab.

What you'll see Copy your new token mgst_Q3vK9xT2pL7mN4rB8wZ1cF6hJ…Copy

Says “Couldn't copy”? Click inside the token box, select all of it (Cmd+A on Mac, Ctrl+A on Windows), and copy (Cmd+C or Ctrl+C).

  5. Paste it into the AIPI setup page

Switch to the AIPI setup page, click the box Paste your SDK token, and press Cmd+V (Mac) or Ctrl+V (Windows). It turns green when it's right: it starts with mgst_ and is 48 characters long.

Lost your token? The page only shows the first few characters of a saved token. Click Revoke next to it, confirm on “Revoke this token?”, then click Generate token for a new one. The page may let you keep only one active token.
Keep it to yourselfDon't post your token in Discord, screenshots or support emails. We'll never ask for it.
Revoking has a side effectGadgets set up with a revoked token may stop connecting. Run setup again with the new token to fix it.

Part 2 · on your computer

Install Muse on your AIPI

  1. Plug in your AIPI

Connect it to your computer with the USB-C data cable, straight into the computer, not a hub, dock or monitor. AIPI turns on by itself when it gets power. On a laptop, plug the laptop into power too, so it doesn't sleep mid-install.

  2. Quit apps that use USB devices

Only one app can talk to your AIPI at a time. Quit Arduino IDE, serial monitors and 3D-printer software, and close any other tab with the setup page open.

  3. Click Connect AIPI Lite, then pick it in Chrome's box

On the setup page, click Connect AIPI Lite. Chrome opens a small box, “aipi.com wants to connect to a serial port”. Click USB JTAG/serial debug unit to select it, then click Connect. On Mac its name ends in (cu.usbmodem…); on Windows, in (COM3) or another COM number.

What you'll see aipi.com wants to connect to a serial port USB JTAG/serial debug unit (cu.usbmodem1101) CancelConnect

Empty list? Try another cable or port, then see part 5, “Chrome's list is empty”.

  4. Click Back up and install, then Save

The page shows “Found your AIPI Lite”. Click Continue, then Back up and install. Chrome asks where to save aipi-backup-A1B2C3.bin (your six characters will differ). Keep the name, choose a folder you'll remember (Downloads is fine) and click Save. This file is your way back to the AIPI system.

  5. Wait for four ticks

The page works through: Back up your AIPI system, Install Muse for AIPI, Restart, Add your SDK token. Don't unplug the cable, close the tab or let the computer sleep. If it stops, plug back in and click the button again; your backup is already saved.

  6. Your AIPI shows its code

When the page says Muse is installed, your AIPI shows “In the Muse app, pick MuseGadget-A1B2C3”. Your six characters will be different. Leave it plugged in and pick up your phone.

Part 3 · on your phone

Add your AIPI in the Muse app

Turn on Bluetooth and keep your phone within arm's reach of your AIPI the whole time.

  1. Open Muse, signed in to the same account

The account you made the SDK token with in part 1.

  2. Turn on Developer mode

Go to Settings › Devices and switch on Developer mode. Muse only lists community gadgets like AIPI when it's on.

  3. Tap + to add a device, and allow Bluetooth

Still on Devices, tap + at the top right (Add Device). If your phone asks: on iPhone tap Allow for Bluetooth; on Android, tap Allow when asked to find and connect to nearby devices.

Said “Don't allow” by mistake? iPhone: Settings › Muse › turn on Bluetooth. Android: Settings › Apps › Muse › Permissions › Nearby devices › Allow.

  4. Pick the name that ends in your code

Wait a few seconds for the list. Tap MuseGadget-A1B2C3, where A1B2C3 is the code on your AIPI's screen. If other gadgets are nearby, only pick yours.

  5. Continue past the community device notice

Muse warns that this is a community device, meaning it isn't made by Meta. It's your AIPI, so tap to continue.

  6. Press the right button on your AIPI

Your AIPI's screen turns blue and says Press. Press the right button below the logo once. You have 60 seconds. Missed it? Tap + in Muse and pick your AIPI again.

  7. Choose your Wi-Fi and type its password

Muse asks which Wi-Fi your AIPI should use. Pick a 2.4 GHz network and type its password carefully; it's case-sensitive. If it's wrong, Muse lets you try again.

Which one is 2.4 GHz? Many routers show two names, one with “5G”. Pick the other one. Using an iPhone hotspot? Settings › Personal Hotspot › turn on Maximize Compatibility first.

  8. Wait for the face

Your AIPI shows Joining Wi-Fi…, then a face. That can take up to a minute. When the face appears, it's connected to Muse and you can unplug it.

Part 4 · everyday use

Use it

Left · menuRight · hold to talk
Ask somethingHold the right button, speak, then let go. Muse's answer appears on the screen as text, and sometimes a picture. Add a voice service during setup (step 4, “Make it talk”) and Muse reads answers out loud too.
Open the menuPress the left button. Each press moves down the list; the right button selects. Volume, Brightness, Auto-sleep, Wi-Fi, Status, Battery, Reset pairing, Screen off, Power off and Close menu are all here.
Sleep and wakeOn battery, the screen turns off after a while to save power. Press any button to wake it. Change the timing in Menu › Auto-sleep.
Take it with youWith the battery module attached, it runs unplugged. It only knows the Wi-Fi you set up, so in a new place, reset pairing and add it again.

Part 5 · troubleshooting

If something goes wrong

The setup page says my token doesn't look right
  1. Go back to gadgets.muse.ai/settings/sdk-tokens and copy it again with the Copy button, not by hand.
  2. It must start with mgst_ and be 48 characters, with no spaces at the start or end.
  3. Copied it earlier and can't see it any more? Revoke it and generate a new one (part 1).
Chrome's list is empty, or my AIPI isn't in it
  1. Try another USB-C cable. Many only charge. A cable that came with a phone usually carries data.
  2. Plug straight into the computer, not a hub, dock or monitor, and try another port.
  3. Check the AIPI screen is lit. If it's dark, unplug it, wait five seconds, plug it in again.
  4. Quit Arduino IDE, serial monitors and 3D-printer software, and close other setup tabs.
  5. On Linux, add your user to the dialout group, log out and back in, then reload the page.
The install stopped halfway
  1. Keep the cable in. Reload the setup page, connect again and click Back up and install.
  2. Your backup file from the first try is still on your computer. Keep it; you can skip saving a new one.
  3. If it keeps stopping, email support with a screenshot of the page.
My AIPI isn't in the Muse app's list
  1. Check Developer mode is on in Muse › Settings › Devices.
  2. Check Bluetooth is on and allowed for Muse (part 3, step 3).
  3. Check your AIPI shows its code. If the screen is off, press the left button once to wake it.
  4. Move your phone right next to your AIPI, close and reopen Muse, and tap + again.
  5. Was it set up with another phone or account before? Reset pairing on your AIPI first.
I didn't press the button in time
  1. Nothing is broken. In Muse, tap + again and pick your AIPI.
  2. Have your finger on the right button before you tap the name.
It's stuck on Joining Wi-Fi
  1. Pick a 2.4 GHz network. Avoid names with 5G in them.
  2. Retype the password slowly. It's case-sensitive.
  3. Networks with a sign-in web page (hotels, schools, offices) won't work. Use your phone's hotspot.
  4. iPhone hotspot: Settings › Personal Hotspot › Maximize Compatibility on.
  5. To try another network, reset pairing on your AIPI and add it in Muse again.
It worked before, now it says Can't reach Muse
  1. Check your Wi-Fi: can your phone load a web page on it? If not, restart the router.
  2. Changed your Wi-Fi name or password, or moved house? Reset pairing and add it again.
  3. Scan the code on your AIPI's screen. It opens a help page for your exact device.
It's on the wrong Muse account
  1. Reset pairing on your AIPI.
  2. In the old account's Muse app, remove it under Settings › Devices.
  3. Add it again from the right account. The SDK token must also come from that account, so run setup again if it doesn't.
Muse doesn't speak its answers out loud
  1. By default answers appear as text on the screen — that's normal on gadgets.
  2. Want voice? Run setup again and finish step 4, Make it talk, with a voice service. It's optional, so skipping it leaves everything else working.
  3. Check the screen after you let go of the right button.
I'm outside the US or Canada
  1. Muse isn't offered in your country yet, so pairing can't finish.
  2. Switch back to the AIPI system (part 6) and keep using your characters.

How to reset pairing on your AIPI

  1. Press the left button to open the menu.
  2. Keep pressing the left button until Reset pairing is highlighted.
  3. Press the right button to open it, then the right button again to confirm. The left button cancels.
  4. Your AIPI forgets Muse and the Wi-Fi, and shows its code again. In Muse, remove the old entry under Settings › Devices, then follow part 3 again.

Part 6 · any time

Switch back to AIPI

  1. Open Switch back to AIPI in Chrome or Edge and plug in your AIPI.
  2. Choose My backup file and pick your aipi-backup-….bin. No file? Choose A fresh AIPI system.
  3. Click Connect and restore, pick USB JTAG/serial debug unit in Chrome's box, click Connect, and wait for it to finish.
  4. In the Muse app, go to Settings › Devices and remove MuseGadget-….
  5. Restored from a backup? You're done. Installed a fresh AIPI system? Connect it to Wi-Fi through its PI-Lite-XXXX network (192.168.4.1), show the device code by holding the right Function button and double-pressing it, then add it at xdc.aipi.com with Add Devices.
